Owner, Johannes Østensjø established Østensjø Rederi in 1974. His passion for innovation and vessel design, along with his dedication to move forward, has provided the company with an amazing history. In collaboration with long standing partners and exceptional employees, the company has been at the forefront of the maritime industry for over 40 years.
1973 | Signed the first deal for construction of four supply vessels with a shipyard in South Africa. |
1974 | Østensjø Rederi was officially established in Haugesund, Norway. |
1975 | Signed the first tug deal. It was not successful, but it formed the basis of the company’s future success in the towing segment. |
1976 | First major platform supply deal is signed with energy giant British Petroleum (BP) at the Forties field near Dundee. |
1978 | First major platform supply deal is signed with energy giant British Petroleum (BP) at the Forties field near Dundee. |
1982 | First in the world to install dynamic positioning (DP) on a PSV (Edda Fjord). Industry standard today. Signed a contract with the giant new Kårstø gas terminal near Haugesund. The contract lasted until 2015. |
1986 | The oil price fell below $10. Energy firms began reviewing their contracts and we survived by reluctantly selling off vessels. |
1987 | BREAKING POINT: With the company facing uncertain future, we signed two extensive deals on the same day! The clients were Statoil and Norsk Hydro. |
1993 | Esso Fawley refinery in the UK signed a ten-year tug contract. Østensjø Rederi opened its first English office in Southampton. |
1996 | Together with 40 shipping companies, we took part in establishing a maritime apprentice office for the west coast of Norway - Maritimt Opplæringskontor Sør/Vest Norge. |
1997 | Østensjø Rederi opened its office in Ireland in Cobh Cork Harbour. |
2000 | The Ajax escort tug is commissioned. It is the largest and most powerful tug of its kind in the world at the time of delivery. |
2003 | Edda Fonn delivered as the first purpose built ROV-/survey/light construction vessel in our fleet. |
2006 | Took part in establishing well intervention company Deepwell. |
2011 | Established the Accommodation segment with Edda Fides being the first vessel of its kind in the world |
2014 | Awarded two long-term tug contracts with Statoil on Melkøya and Sture terminal. The contract included seven new buildings. |
2015 | Entered the renewable offshore wind segment with the commissioning of a service operation vessel on contract for DONG Energy. |
2016 | Became the first shipping company in the world to get 9001:2015 accreditation from DNV. The advanced Offshore Construction Vessel (OSV) Edda Freya is delivered. She is the largest investment in the history of the company. The Siemens BlueDrive plus C system is installed in combination with a large battery package, providing the vessel with a very good environmental footprint. |
2017 | Takes delivery of three dual fueled tugs. First dual fueled escort tugs built in Europe. The tugs commenced long term contract for Statoil Hammerfest LNG. |
2018 | Takes delivery of two unique purpose-built SOV's, Edda Passat and Edda Mistral from Astilleros Gondán in Spain. The SOV's commenced contract with Ørsted. |
